Jose Maria Olazabal has admitted he’s unlikely to make September's Ryder Cup team.
The two-time US Masters champion, 42, is Nick Faldo's vice-captain for the Kentucky event, and has recently returned to competitive action after persistent problems with rheumatism cut short his 2007 season.
But he knows he is unlikely to hit the sort of form which will elevate him into an automatic place – or even ensure Faldo contemplates using him as a captain’s pick.
He said: “Unless I completely recover right away and my game hits standards I haven't yet reached in my life before, as far as playing is concerned, I am out of the picture.”
It was Olazabal’s second long spell out of golf after suffering arthritis in his foot in 1995-96. His most recent problem affects his knee, shoulder, groin and lowerback, hindering his walking and bending.
